For the third year in a row, the SADC chlorides market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by X% to $X in 2023. The total production indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, production decreased by X% against 2021 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the production volume increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2022 to 2023, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Exports in SADC

In 2023, approx. X tons of chlorides (excluding ammonium chloride) were exported in SADC; growing by X% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports showed a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chlorides exports declined sharply to $X in 2023. In general, exports enjoyed a tangible increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2023, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. X% of total exports in 2023. It was distantly followed by Angola (X tons), making up an X% share of total exports. Mozambique (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Angola (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. By contrast, Mozambique (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2023, the share of Angola and Mozambique increased by X and X percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest chlorides supplier in SADC, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Angola ($X), with a X% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled X%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Angola (X% per year) and Mozambique (X% per year).

In 2023, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a pronounced decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 when the export price increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (X%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Chlorides imports surged to X tons in 2023, with an increase of X% against the previous year. Total imports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, imports increased by X% against 2020 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, chlorides imports rose rapidly to $X in 2023. Over the period under review, imports showed notable growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2023 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2023, South Africa (X tons) represented the largest importer of chlorides (excluding ammonium chloride), generating X% of total imports. Zimbabwe (X tons) took a X% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Namibia (X%), Angola (X%) and Tanzania (X%).

From 2012 to 2023, average annual rates of growth with regard to chlorides imports into South Africa stood at X%. At the same time, Zimbabwe (X%) and Namibia (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. By contrast, Tanzania (X%) and Angola (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (X p.p.), Zimbabwe (X p.p.) and Namibia (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2023, the share of Tanzania (X p.p.) and Angola (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2022 an increase of X%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped significantly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
