In 2021, the amount of bicycles and other cycles exported in SADC soared to X units, increasing by 73% on the year before. In general, exports recorded a resilient expansion. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

South Africa represented the largest exporter of bicycles and other cycles in SADC, with the volume of exports finishing at X units, which was approx. 61% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Mauritius (X units), generating a 35% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Mauritius (with a CAGR of +25.0%).

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, surging by 17% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 19%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per unit), while South Africa totaled $X per unit.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+11.9%).

In 2021, purchases abroad of bicycles and other cycles increased by 37% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a mild contraction. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, bicycle imports surged to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

South Africa was the largest importer of bicycles and other cycles in SADC, with the volume of imports recording X units, which was near 47% of total imports in 2021. Tanzania (X units) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Mozambique (X units) and Malawi (X units). All these countries together took near 28% share of total imports. Zambia (X units), Zimbabwe (X units), Angola (X units), Madagascar (X units), Mauritius (X units), Botswana (X units) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to bicycle imports into South Africa stood at -6.4%. At the same time, Mozambique (+75.0%), Malawi (+23.1%), Tanzania (+11.1%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+7.9%), Botswana (+7.0%), Zambia (+5.7%), Angola (+3.6%) and Mauritius (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +75.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Madagascar (-1.4%) and Zimbabwe (-4.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Tanzania (+8.8 p.p.), Mozambique (+8.1 p.p.), Malawi (+5.3 p.p.), Botswana (+2.9 p.p.) and Zambia (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -29.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported bicycles and other cycles in SADC, comprising 37% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mozambique ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 9.7% share.

In South Africa, bicycle imports declined by an average annual rate of -2.5% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mozambique (+12.6% per year) and Mauritius (+15.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, with an increase of 15% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.7%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the import price increased by 19% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per unit), while Botswana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+13.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
