Potato Market Size in Romania

After four years of growth, the Romanian potato market decreased by -X% to $X in 2020. Over the period under review, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Potato consumption peaked at $X in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2020, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Potato Production in Romania

In value terms, potato production totaled $X in 2020 estimated in export prices. Overall, the total production indicated modest growth from 2007 to 2020: its value decreased at an average annual rate of -X% over the last thirteen years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2020 figures, production increased by +X% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Potato production peaked at $X in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2020, production remained at a lower figure.

The average yield of potatoes in Romania amounted to X tonnes per ha in 2020, flattening at 2019 figures. Over the period under review, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the yield increased by X% year-to-year. The potato yield peaked at X tonnes per ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2020, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2020, the potato harvested area in Romania fell to X ha, with a decrease of -X% against the previous year. In general, the harvested area saw a perceptible decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the harvested area increased by X% against the previous year. The potato harvested area peaked at X ha in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2020, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Romania

After two years of decline, shipments abroad of potatoes increased by X% to X tonnes in 2020. Over the period under review, exports showed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Exports peaked in 2020 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, potato exports surged to $X in 2020. In general, exports continue to indicate prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by X% y-o-y. As a result, exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2020, the growth exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Moldova (X tonnes), Ukraine (X tonnes) and Poland (X tonnes) were the main destinations of potato exports from Romania, together comprising X% of total exports.

From 2007 to 2020, the biggest increases were in Ukraine (+X% per year), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for potato exported from Romania were Moldova ($X), Ukraine ($X) and Poland ($X), together accounting for X% of total exports.

Ukraine (+X% per year) recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2020, the average potato export price amounted to $X per tonne, falling by -X% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a pronounced shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by X% year-to-year. The export price peaked at $X per tonne in 2019, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Ukraine ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Moldova, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Potato Imports

Imports into Romania

In 2020, approx. X tonnes of potatoes were imported into Romania; declining by -X% against the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Imports peaked at X tonnes in 2019, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

In value terms, potato imports dropped markedly to $X in 2020. In general, imports, however, posted a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

Imports by Country

France (X tonnes), Germany (X tonnes) and the Netherlands (X tonnes) were the main suppliers of potato imports to Romania, with a combined X% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Greece, Poland, Austria and Hungary, which together accounted for a further X 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Poland, while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), France ($X) and Germany ($X) appeared to be the largest potato suppliers to Romania, with a combined X% share of total imports. Greece, Poland, Hungary and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average potato import price stood at $X per tonne in 2020, declining by -X% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the average import price increased by X% year-to-year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per tonne, and then fell notably in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per tonne), while the price for Austria ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland, while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
