Pig Iron Market Size in Republic of Korea

The South Korean pig iron market was estimated at $X in 2020, with an increase of X% against the previous year. Overall, the total consumption indicated a pronounced increase from 2007 to 2020: its value increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2020 figures, consumption increased by +X% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010 when the market value increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2020, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Pig Iron Production in Republic of Korea

In value terms, pig iron production expanded significantly to $X in 2020 estimated in export prices. In general, production continues to indicate a slight increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2020, production failed to regain the momentum.

Exports from Republic of Korea

In 2020, pig iron exports from South Korea stood at X tonnes, picking up by X% against 2019 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, exports attained the maximum at X tonnes in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2020, exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pig iron exports expanded significantly to $X in 2020. In general, exports, however, saw a pronounced shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Exports peaked at $X in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2020, exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Viet Nam (X tonnes) was the main destination for pig iron exports from South Korea, with a X% share of total exports. Moreover, pig iron exports to Viet Nam exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, China (X tonnes), fourfold.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of volume to Viet Nam stood at +X%.

In value terms, Viet Nam ($X) and China ($X) were the largest markets for pig iron exported from South Korea worldwide, with a combined X% share of total exports.

China saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review.

Export Prices by Country

The average pig iron export price stood at $X per tonne in 2020, approximately mirroring the previous year. In general, the export price saw a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, average export prices hit record highs at $X per tonne in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2020, export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2020, the country with the highest price was China ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Viet Nam amounted to $X per tonne.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Viet Nam.

Pig Iron Imports

Imports into Republic of Korea

In 2020, the amount of pig iron and spiegeleisen imported into South Korea dropped to X tonnes, waning by -X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010 when imports increased by X% y-o-y. Imports peaked at X tonnes in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2020, imports failed to regain the momentum.

In value terms, pig iron imports reduced rapidly to $X in 2020. Overall, imports continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2009 to 2020, the growth imports failed to regain the momentum.

Imports by Country

Russia (X tonnes), Japan (X tonnes) and South Africa (X tonnes) were the main suppliers of pig iron imports to South Korea, with a combined X% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Canada, which accounted for a further X 2007 to 2020, the biggest increases were in Canada, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of pig iron to South Korea, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Japan ($X), with a X% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa, with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of value from Russia stood at -X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Japan (+X% per year) and South Africa (-X% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average pig iron import price stood at $X per tonne in 2020, shrinking by -X% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2008 an increase of X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per tonne in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2020, import prices failed to regain the momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2020, the countries with the highest prices were Canada ($X per tonne) and Russia ($X per tonne), while the price for South Africa ($X per tonne) and Japan ($X per tonne) were amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Canada, while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
