Pig Iron Market Size in China

The Chinese pig iron market reduced to $X in 2021, shrinking by -3.8% against the previous year. In general, the total consumption indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -4.8% against 2018 indices. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pig iron production reduced to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a temperate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 154%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Exports from China

In 2021, shipments abroad of pig iron and spiegeleisen increased by 8,502% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after seven years of decline. In general, exports, however, showed a deep contraction. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pig iron exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Turkey (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Japan (X tons) were the main destinations of pig iron exports from China, together comprising 78% of total exports. These countries were followed by South Korea, Taiwan (Chinese) and Malaysia, which together accounted for a further 22%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Malaysia (with a CAGR of +6.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for pig iron exported from China were Turkey ($X), Thailand ($X) and Japan ($X), with a combined 76% share of total exports. South Korea, Taiwan (Chinese) and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 24%.

Malaysia, with a CAGR of +9.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average pig iron export price amounted to $X per ton, flattening at the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, pig iron export price decreased by -9.5% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 90% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Japan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malaysia (+2.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into China

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of pig iron and spiegeleisen, when their volume decreased by -64.1% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 820% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, pig iron imports shrank notably to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 442% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then declined remarkably in the following year.

Imports by Country

Russia (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and India (X tons) were the main suppliers of pig iron imports to China, together accounting for 73% of total imports. These countries were followed by Ukraine, Oman, Iran, Indonesia, Germany and Japan, which together accounted for a further 23%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Germany (with a CAGR of +418.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest pig iron suppliers to China were Russia ($X), Brazil ($X) and India ($X), together comprising 69% of total imports. These countries were followed by Ukraine, Indonesia, Oman, Iran, Germany and Japan, which together accounted for a further 26%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Germany, with a CAGR of +281.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average pig iron import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 41% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 74% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while the price for Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+3.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
