Ginger Market Size in Republic of Korea

For the third consecutive year, the South Korean ginger market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by X% to $X in 2020. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate moderate growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the market value increased by X% y-o-y. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2020, the harvested area of ginger in South Korea fell slightly to X ha, remaining constant against the year before. In general, the harvested area continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010 when the harvested area increased by X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to ginger production reached the maximum at X ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2020, the harvested area failed to regain the momentum.

Exports from Republic of Korea

Ginger exports from South Korea declined sharply to X tonnes in 2020, which is down by -X% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports recorded a perceptible setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by X% year-to-year. As a result, exports attained the peak of X tonnes. from 2017 to 2020, the growth exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, ginger exports plummeted to $X in 2020. Overall, exports saw a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, exports attained the peak of $X. from 2014 to 2020, the growth exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The U.S. (X tonnes), Singapore (X tonnes) and Malaysia (X tonnes) were the main destinations of ginger exports from South Korea, together accounting for X% of total exports.

From 2007 to 2020, the biggest increases were in Singapore, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the U.S. ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for ginger exports from South Korea, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Australia ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Bahrain, with a X% share.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average export price increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average export prices hit record highs at $X per tonne in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2020, export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Malaysia ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the U.S., while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2020, supplies from abroad of ginger decreased by -X% to X tonnes for the first time since 2017, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports recorded a slight setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tonnes, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

In value terms, ginger imports amounted to $X in 2020. Overall, imports posted a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by X% year-to-year. Imports peaked in 2020 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
