In 2021, the Chinese ginger market increased by 36% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. In general, consumption saw a slight expansion. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.
Ginger Production in China
In value terms, ginger production reduced to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, posted prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 129% against the previous year. Ginger production peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.
The average yield of ginger in China reached X tons per ha in 2021, approximately equating the previous year. In general, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 3.7%. Over the period under review, the average ginger yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2021, the ginger harvested area in China declined modestly to X ha, with a decrease of -1.6% on the previous year's figure. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the harvested area increased by 11% against the previous year. The ginger harvested area peaked at X ha in 2020, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

Exports from China
In 2021, overseas shipments of ginger decreased by -10.5% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Overall, total exports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -15.0% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 37%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, ginger exports shrank sharply to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, posted buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 53%. The exports peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.
Exports by Country
The Netherlands (X tons), the United States (X tons) and Pakistan (X tons) were the main destinations of ginger exports from China, together comprising 34% of total exports. The United Arab Emirates, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Japan, Saudi Arabia, the UK, Canada and South Korea lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 50%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +15.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), the United States ($X) and Japan ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for ginger exported from China worldwide, with a combined 39% share of total exports. Pakistan, Malaysia, Vietnam, the UK, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bangladesh, Canada and South Korea lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 43%.
The United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +20.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average ginger export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -11% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, ginger export price increased by +32.7% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 32% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Vietnam (+9.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Ginger Imports
Imports into China
In 2021, approx. X tons of ginger were imported into China; growing by 231% on the previous year's figure. Overall, imports enjoyed a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 393%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
In value terms, ginger imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports posted a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 309% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Nigeria (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of ginger to China, with a 68% share of total imports. Moreover, ginger imports from Nigeria exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Myanmar (X tons), fourfold. Vietnam (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 5.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Nigeria amounted to +258.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Myanmar (+139.4% per year) and Vietnam (+190.0% per year).
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constituted the largest supplier of ginger to China, comprising 71% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Myanmar ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by India, with a 7.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Nigeria stood at +276.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Myanmar (+120.1% per year) and India (+17.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average ginger import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 5.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 92%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the price for Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
