For the fourth consecutive year, MENA recorded decline in shipments abroad of aluminium hydroxide, which decreased by -40.1% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a precipitous decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, aluminium hydroxide exports dropped dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Turkey represented the main exporter of aluminium hydroxide in MENA, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near 80% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Saudi Arabia (X tons), creating a 16% share of total exports. Israel (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to aluminium hydroxide exports from Turkey stood at -22.8%. At the same time, Saudi Arabia (+73.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Saudi Arabia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +73.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Israel (-22.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Saudi Arabia (+16 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Turkey saw its share reduced by -17.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest aluminium hydroxide supplier in MENA, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 26% share of total exports.

In Turkey, aluminium hydroxide exports declined by an average annual rate of -20.4% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Saudi Arabia (+67.7% per year) and Israel (-19.9% per year).

In 2021, imports of aluminium hydroxide in MENA expanded sharply to X tons, picking up by 11% compared with 2020 figures. Total imports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -18.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 31%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, aluminium hydroxide imports rose notably to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -13.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 29%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

It was distantly followed by Tunisia (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Morocco (X tons), together constituting a 45% share of total imports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +11.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest aluminium hydroxide importing markets in MENA were Turkey ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and Tunisia ($X), together comprising 73% of total imports. These countries were followed by the United Arab Emirates, Morocco and Egypt, which together accounted for a further 18%.

The United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +14.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 17%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
