Potato Market Size in Kenya

Over the period under review, potato exports attained their peak figure at X tonnes in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2018, exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, potato exports stood at $X in 2018. Overall, potato exports, however, continue to indicate extraordinary growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2009 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, potato exports reached their maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2018, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Uganda (X tonnes) was the main destination for potato exports from Kenya, with a X% share of total exports. Moreover, potato exports to Uganda exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Somalia (X tonnes), fourfold.

From 2007 to 2018, the average annual growth rate of volume to Uganda amounted to +X%.

In value terms, Uganda ($X) and Somalia ($X) were the largest markets for potato exported from Kenya worldwide, together comprising X% of total exports.

Uganda recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the last eleven-year period.

Export Prices by Country

The average potato export price stood at $X per tonne in 2018, going down by -X% against the previous year. Overall, the potato export price, however, continues to indicate resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2010 an increase of X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, the average export prices for potatoes reached their maximum at $X per tonne in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2018, export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest price was Somalia ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Uganda totaled $X per tonne.

From 2007 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Uganda.

Potato Imports

Imports into Kenya

In 2018, the amount of potatoes imported into Kenya amounted to X tonnes, dropping by -X% against the previous year. Overall, potato imports continue to indicate an abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, potato imports attained their peak figure at X tonnes in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2018, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, potato imports totaled $X in 2018. Over the period under review, potato imports continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of X% against the previous year. In that year, potato imports attained their peak of $X, and then declined slightly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2018, Tanzania (X tonnes) constituted the largest potato supplier to Kenya, with a X% share of total imports. Moreover, potato imports from Tanzania exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Netherlands (X tonnes), sevenfold.

From 2007 to 2018, the average annual growth rate of volume from Tanzania totaled -X%.

In value terms, the largest potato suppliers to Kenya were Tanzania ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), with a combined X% share of total imports.

In terms of the main suppliers, the Netherlands experienced the highest rates of growth with regard to imports, over the last eleven-year period.

Import Prices by Country

The average potato import price stood at $X per tonne in 2018, picking up by X% against the previous year. Overall, the potato import price continues to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2010 when the average import price increased by X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, the average import prices for potatoes reached their peak figure at $X per tonne in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2018, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2018, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per tonne), while the price for Tanzania amounted to $X per tonne.

From 2007 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania.
