Tanzania (X tons) was the main destination for matches exports from Kenya, accounting for a 68% share of total exports. Moreover, matches exports to Tanzania exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Zambia (X tons), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Sudan (X tons), with a 9.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Tanzania totaled +51.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Zambia (+69.7% per year) and Sudan (+97.2% per year).
In value terms, Tanzania ($X) remains the key foreign market for matches exports from Kenya, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Sudan ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Zambia, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Tanzania amounted to +54.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Sudan (+99.9% per year) and Zambia (+77.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average matches export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last nine-year period. Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Sudan ($X per ton) and Mozambique ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Rwanda ($X per ton) and Tanzania ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Democratic Republic of the Congo (+11.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Matches Imports
Imports into Kenya
In 2021, approx. X tons of matches were imported into Kenya; rising by 120% on 2020. Over the period under review, imports, however, faced a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 303% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, matches imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, faced a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 286%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, India (X tons) constituted the largest matches supplier to Kenya, with a 62% share of total imports. Moreover, matches imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Pakistan (X tons), twofold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from India amounted to -16.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Pakistan (+51.3% per year) and Uganda (-0.1% per year).
In value terms, the largest matches suppliers to Kenya were India ($X), Pakistan ($X) and Uganda ($X), together comprising 99% of total imports.
In terms of the main suppliers, Pakistan, with a CAGR of +46.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.
Import Prices by Country
The average matches import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 10% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 22%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uganda ($X per ton), while the price for India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uganda (-3.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
