Potato Market Size in Hungary

The Hungarian potato market fell modestly to $X in 2020, shrinking by -X% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a pronounced decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2011 when the market value increased by X% y-o-y. Potato consumption peaked at $X in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2020, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Potato Production in Hungary

In value terms, potato production contracted to $X in 2020 estimated in export prices. Over the period under review, production continues to indicate a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2011 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Potato production peaked at $X in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2020, production failed to regain the momentum.

The average yield of potatoes in Hungary was estimated at X tonnes per ha in 2020, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the period from 2007 to 2020; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011 with an increase of X% year-to-year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tonnes per ha. from 2012 to 2020, the growth of the average potato yield failed to regain the momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2020, the total area harvested in terms of potatoes production in Hungary shrank to X ha, with a decrease of -X% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, the harvested area showed a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2012 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to potato production attained the maximum at X ha in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2020, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

In 2020, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of potatoes, when their volume decreased by -X% to X tonnes. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, exports reached the maximum at X tonnes in 2019, and then dropped significantly in the following year.

In value terms, potato exports fell dramatically to $X in 2020. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate moderate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by X% year-to-year. As a result, exports reached the peak of $X, and then declined markedly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Romania (X tonnes), the Czech Republic (X tonnes) and Austria (X tonnes) were the main destinations of potato exports from Hungary, together comprising X% of total exports.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Austria (+X% per year), while exports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Romania ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and Austria ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for potato exported from Hungary worldwide, with a combined X% share of total exports.

Austria (+X% per year) saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2020, the average potato export price amounted to $X per tonne, waning by -X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a mild contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average export prices reached the maximum at $X per tonne in 2009; however, from 2010 to 2020, export prices failed to regain the momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Austria ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Slovakia, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Hungary

In 2020, overseas purchases of potatoes increased by X% to X tonnes, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports enjoyed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Imports peaked in 2020 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, potato imports declined slightly to $X in 2020. Overall, imports enjoyed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2019, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2020, France (X tonnes) constituted the largest potato supplier to Hungary, with a X% share of total imports. Moreover, potato imports from France exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Netherlands (X tonnes), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Slovakia (X tonnes), with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from France totaled +X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+X% per year) and Slovakia (+X% per year).

In value terms, the largest potato suppliers to Hungary were France ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Slovakia ($X), together comprising X% of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, France saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2020, the average potato import price amounted to $X per tonne, shrinking by -X% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a slight descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per tonne in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2020, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
