After two years of growth, shipments abroad of wine and grape must decreased by -63.3% to X litres in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 811% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X litres in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, wine exports reduced dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 899% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined significantly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Japan (X litres), Bahrain (X litres) and Jordan (X litres) were the main destinations of wine exports from Egypt, together accounting for 41% of total exports. These countries were followed by France and the UK, which together accounted for a further 8.4%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for France (with a CAGR of +111.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for wine exported from Egypt were Japan ($X), France ($X) and Bahrain ($X), together accounting for 47% of total exports. Jordan and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 2.9%.
The UK, with a CAGR of +131.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average wine export price amounted to $X per litre, falling by -33% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 223%. The export price peaked at $X per litre in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Jordan ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United Arab Emirates (+18.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, overseas purchases of wine and grape must decreased by -99.2% to X litres, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, imports recorded a dramatic shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 1,055%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X litres in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, wine imports shrank significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports faced a sharp contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 1,937%. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Hungary (X litres) constituted the largest supplier of wine to Egypt, with a 37% share of total imports. Moreover, wine imports from Hungary exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X litres), fourfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Hungary totaled +57.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (-20.6% per year) and France (-31.8% per year).
In value terms, Hungary ($X) constituted the largest supplier of wine and grape must to Egypt, comprising 32% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($X), with a 12% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Hungary amounted to +71.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (-11.4% per year) and France (-32.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average wine import price stood at $X per litre in 2022, falling by -41.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw slight growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 84% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per litre in 2021, and then declined remarkably in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per litre), while the price for Hungary ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+11.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
