Wine Exports

Exports in the EU

In 2022, wine exports in the European Union dropped to X litres, with a decrease of X% against the year before. In general, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by X%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X litres, and then declined modestly in the following year.

In value terms, wine exports fell slightly to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then declined slightly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Italy (X litres) and Spain (X litres) represented roughly X% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by France (X litres), Germany (X litres) and Portugal (X litres), together constituting a X% share of total exports. The following exporters - Belgium (X litres) and Hungary (X litres) - each recorded a X% share of total exports.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per litre), while Hungary ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wine imports fell to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of X%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then declined in the following year.

Imports by Country

Germany represented the largest importer of wine and grape must in the European Union, with the volume of imports reaching X litres, which was approx. X% of total imports in 2022. France (X litres) held the second position in the ranking, followed by the Netherlands (X litres), Belgium (X litres) and Portugal (X litres). All these countries together held approx. X% share of total imports. Belgium, France, the Czech Republic, Lithuania and Denmark experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Italy (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Portugal (X p.p.) and Latvia (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Italy and Germany saw its share reduced by X% and X% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per litre), while Portugal ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
