Potato Market Size in Egypt

For the third year in a row, the Egyptian potato market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by X% to $X in 2023. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, consumption decreased by X% against 2020 indices. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2023, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Potato Production in Egypt

In value terms, potato production declined to $X in 2023 estimated in export price. In general, the total production indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, production decreased by X% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of X%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X; afterwards, it flattened through to 2023.

In 2023, the average potato yield in Egypt amounted to X tons per ha, remaining stable against the previous year's figure. Overall, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the yield increased by X%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2021 to 2023, the growth of the average potato yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The potato harvested area in Egypt shrank slightly to X ha in 2023, standing approx. at 2022. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of X%. The potato harvested area peaked at X ha in 2022, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

Exports from Egypt

In 2023, approx. X tons of potatoes were exported from Egypt; which is down by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of X%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2023, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, potato exports soared to $X in 2023. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2023 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Russia (X tons), Greece (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main destinations of potato exports from Egypt, together accounting for X% of total exports. Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, Spain, Slovenia, Lebanon, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X%.

From 2012 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for Belgium (with a CAGR of X%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for potato exported from Egypt were Russia ($X), Greece ($X) and Italy ($X), with a combined X% share of total exports. Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, Spain, Slovenia, Lebanon, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X%.

Slovenia, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2023, the average potato export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by X% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2023: its price increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, potato export price increased by X% against 2018 indices. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Russia ($X per ton) and Italy ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) and Iraq ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Slovenia (X%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Potato Imports

Imports into Egypt

In 2023, purchases abroad of potatoes decreased by X% to X tons for the first time since 2020, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, recorded a perceptible expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2023, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, potato imports reduced remarkably to $X in 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a modest increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2023, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The UK (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and France (X tons) were the main suppliers of potato imports to Egypt, with a combined X% share of total imports. Denmark, Germany, China and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X%.
