Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 557% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, crude granite imports shrank markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 823%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank significantly in the following year.

Imports by Country

Nigeria was the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which accounted for 67% of total imports. Niger (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Burkina Faso (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 29% share of total imports. Gambia (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +40.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Niger (+74.2%), Burkina Faso (+33.3%) and Gambia (+23.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Niger emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of +74.2% from 2012-2022. Nigeria (+39 p.p.), Niger (+19 p.p.) and Burkina Faso (+3.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
