Global consumption peaked at 54M tons in 2021, and then dropped slightly in the following year.
The global crude granite market size fell to $2.8B in 2022, which is down by -7.7% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Consumption By Country
The country with the largest volume of crude granite consumption was Ukraine (29M tons), accounting for 55% of total volume. Moreover, crude granite consumption in Ukraine exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest consumer, China (4.4M tons), sevenfold. The UK (4.3M tons) ranked third in terms of total consumption with an 8.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Ukraine stood at +9.7%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual rates of consumption growth: China (+4.7% per year) and the UK (+17.0% per year).
In value terms, China ($761M) led the market, alone. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($286M). It was followed by India.
In China, the crude granite market increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Turkey (+21.6% per year) and India (+5.2% per year).

World Production of Granite (Crude)
In 2022, production of granite (crude) decreased by -4.1% to 46M tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, the total production indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +80.2% against 2012 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global production attained the peak volume at 48M tons in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year.
In value terms, crude granite production dropped to $1.5B in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 16%. Global production peaked at $1.8B in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
Production By Country
The country with the largest volume of crude granite production was Ukraine (29M tons), accounting for 63% of total volume. Moreover, crude granite production in Ukraine exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, India (5.5M tons), fivefold. Malaysia (4M tons) ranked third in terms of total production with an 8.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Ukraine totaled +9.7%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: India (+0.9% per year) and Malaysia (+1.1% per year).
Imports
World Imports of Granite (Crude)
In 2022, overseas purchases of granite (crude) decreased by -9.5% to 12M tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports attained the maximum at 14M tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, crude granite imports fell to $1.4B in 2022. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $1.7B. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of global imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports By Country
China (4.5M tons) and the UK (4.3M tons) dominates imports structure, together constituting 72% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Denmark (748K tons), achieving a 6.1% share of total imports. Italy (499K tons), Spain (438K tons), the Netherlands (428K tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (245K tons) and Poland (209K tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +63.6%), while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($743M) constitutes the largest market for imported granite (crude) worldwide, comprising 55% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Italy ($182M), with a 13% share of global imports. It was followed by the UK, with a 5.8% share.
In China, crude granite imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (-0.9% per year) and the UK (+14.6% per year).
Import Prices By Country
In 2022, the average crude granite import price amounted to $111 per ton, growing by 5.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average import price increased by 19%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $165 per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($365 per ton), while Denmark ($15 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+19.2%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Exports
World Exports of Granite (Crude)
In 2022, global exports of granite (crude) contracted markedly to 6.2M tons, declining by -21.1% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports saw a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 30%. The global exports peaked at 9.3M tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, crude granite exports fell to $748M in 2022. In general, exports recorded a perceptible descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 9.5%. The global exports peaked at $1B in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports By Country
India was the largest exporting country with an export of around 3.4M tons, which amounted to 55% of total exports. Norway (706K tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 11% share, followed by South Africa (5%). Spain (241K tons), Portugal (223K tons), Angola (200K tons), China (142K tons), Poland (114K tons) and Finland (111K tons) held a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to crude granite exports from India stood at -1.5%. At the same time, Portugal (+4.7%), Spain (+2.4%), Angola (+2.1%) and Poland (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Portugal emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +4.7% from 2012-2022. South Africa and Norway experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Finland (-12.0%) and China (-19.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of India (+12 p.p.), Norway (+3.3 p.p.), Portugal (+2.1 p.p.), Spain (+1.8 p.p.) and South Africa (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global exports from 2012-2022, the share of Finland (-2.5 p.p.) and China (-11.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, India ($395M) remains the largest crude granite supplier worldwide, comprising 53% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($54M), with a 7.3% share of global exports. It was followed by Spain, with a 4% share.
In India, crude granite exports plunged by an average annual rate of -3.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (-0.6% per year) and Spain (+2.2% per year).
Export Prices By Country
In 2022, the average crude granite export price amounted to $120 per ton, growing by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The global export price peaked at $123 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($175 per ton), while Norway ($11 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
