In 2022, the Italian crude granite market increased by 20% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after five years of decline. In general, consumption, however, recorded a abrupt curtailment. Crude granite consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Crude Granite Exports

Exports from Italy

In 2022, overseas shipments of granite (crude) increased by 58% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, total exports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +85.7% against 2020 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, crude granite exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, total exports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +103.0% against 2020 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Albania (X tons) was the main destination for crude granite exports from Italy, accounting for a 42% share of total exports. Moreover, crude granite exports to Albania exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X tons), twofold. Serbia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 5.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Albania amounted to +52.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+22.3% per year) and Serbia (+16.2% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X), Albania ($X) and China ($X) were the largest markets for crude granite exported from Italy worldwide, with a combined 53% share of total exports. Switzerland, Croatia, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Serbia, Poland, France and India lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.

The Czech Republic, with a CAGR of +33.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average crude granite export price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -6.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average export price increased by 17%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Albania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+7.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Italy

In 2022, crude granite imports into Italy soared to X tons, jumping by 24% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Imports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, crude granite imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Zimbabwe (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and India (X tons) were the main suppliers of crude granite imports to Italy, together comprising 43% of total imports. South Africa, Mozambique, France, Spain, Angola, Norway and the United States lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 49%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for France (with a CAGR of +18.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest crude granite suppliers to Italy were Brazil ($X), Zimbabwe ($X) and Mozambique ($X), with a combined 50% share of total imports. South Africa, India, France, Spain, Norway, Angola and the United States lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 43%.

France, with a CAGR of +20.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
