Garlic Market Size in ECOWAS

In 2023, the ECOWAS garlic market decreased by X% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, consumption, however, enjoyed a prominent expansion. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, garlic production rose rapidly to $X in 2023 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a significant expansion. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2023 were Mali (X tons), Niger (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons), with a combined X% share of total production.

From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the main producing countries, was attained by Mali (with a CAGR of X%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2023, the average yield of garlic in ECOWAS rose sharply to X tons per ha, picking up by X% on the previous year. The yield indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2023: its figure increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, garlic yield decreased by X% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of X%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. For the third year in a row, ECOWAS recorded decline in overseas shipments of garlic, which decreased by X% to X tons in 2023. In general, exports continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2023, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, garlic exports shrank dramatically to $X in 2023. Over the period under review, exports recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by X%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2023, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Niger represented the key exporter of garlic in ECOWAS, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was near X% of total exports in 2023. It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Togo (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons), together generating a X% share of total exports. Senegal (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2023, average annual rates of growth with regard to garlic exports from Niger stood at X%. At the same time, Ghana (X%) and Togo (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. By contrast, Cote d'Ivoire (X%), Senegal (X%) and Nigeria (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2023, the share of Niger, Togo and Ghana increased by X, X and X percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, the largest garlic supplying countries in ECOWAS were Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Niger ($X) and Senegal ($X), with a combined X% share of total exports. Ghana, Nigeria and Togo lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X%.

Ghana, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2023, the export price in ECOWAS amounted to $X per ton, surging by X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in ECOWAS

In 2023, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of garlic, when their volume decreased by X% to X tons. In general, imports, however, saw a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2022, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, garlic imports shrank rapidly to $X in 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of X%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2022, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

Imports by Country

Senegal represented the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which reached X% of total imports. Nigeria (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a X% share, followed by Ghana (X%), Cote d'Ivoire (X%), Burkina Faso (X%) and Mali (X%). Guinea (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into Senegal increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Nigeria (X%), Guinea (X%), Burkina Faso (X%), Cote d'Ivoire (X%), Ghana (X%) and Mali (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in ECOWAS, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. While the share of Nigeria (X p.p.), Guinea (X p.p.) and Burkina Faso (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2023, the share of Mali (X p.p.) and Senegal (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
