Roasted Coffee Market Size in Eastern Asia

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was decline in the East Asian roasted coffee market, when its value decreased by -2.1% to $X. The total consumption indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +41.1% against 2017 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

Roasted Coffee Production in Eastern Asia

In value terms, roasted coffee production fell modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +50.7% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced slightly in the following year.

Exports in Eastern Asia

In 2021, shipments abroad of roasted coffee was finally on the rise to reach X tons after four years of decline. In general, exports showed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 460%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, roasted coffee exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 407% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Japan (X tons) and China (X tons) were the key exporters of roasted coffee in 2021, recording near 39% and 27% of total exports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), South Korea (X tons), Hong Kong SAR (X tons) and Macao SAR (X tons), together creating a 34% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Japan (with a CAGR of +17.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Japan ($X) remains the largest roasted coffee supplier in Eastern Asia, comprising 59% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese), with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Japan stood at +19.4%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (-4.5% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+12.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, waning by -12.8% against the previous year. Export price indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, roasted coffee export price increased by +43.6% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Macao SAR ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of roasted coffee increased by 9.1% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. In general, imports showed a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 173%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, roasted coffee imports rose significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 95% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Korea (X tons) and China (X tons) represented the largest importers of roasted coffee in Eastern Asia, together recording approx. 66% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Japan (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) and Hong Kong SAR (X tons), together comprising a 33% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in China (with a CAGR of +17.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest roasted coffee importing markets in Eastern Asia were South Korea ($X), China ($X) and Japan ($X), together comprising 87% of total imports.

China, with a CAGR of +18.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, surging by 2.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 35%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
