In 2021, the East Asian lithium battery market decreased by -39.7% to $X, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, consumption faced a deep slump. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

For the fourth year in a row, Eastern Asia recorded growth in overseas shipments of lithium cells ans batteries, which increased by 39% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports enjoyed a strong expansion. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, lithium battery exports surged to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

China represented the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at 56% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Hong Kong SAR (X tons), Japan (X tons) and South Korea (X tons), together making up a 41% share of total exports. Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the lithium cells ans batteries exports, with a CAGR of +29.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, South Korea (+9.3%), Hong Kong SAR (+6.3%), Japan (+3.2%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of China (+39 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Korea (-3.7 p.p.), Taiwan (Chinese) (-5.1 p.p.), Hong Kong SAR (-14.7 p.p.) and Japan (-15.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest lithium battery supplying countries in Eastern Asia were China ($X), Hong Kong SAR ($X) and Japan ($X), together accounting for 87% of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, China, with a CAGR of +14.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -15.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a abrupt downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 8.8%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -13.6% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 27%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, lithium battery imports rose remarkably to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 19%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Hong Kong SAR (X tons) and China (X tons) dominates imports structure, together creating 77% of total imports. South Korea (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 8.5% share, followed by Japan (8.2%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (6.4%).

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by South Korea (with a CAGR of +17.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X), China ($X) and Japan ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 86% of total imports. These countries were followed by South Korea and Taiwan (Chinese), which together accounted for a further 14%.

South Korea, with a CAGR of +9.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 6.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a pronounced reduction. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) and Japan ($X per ton), while South Korea ($X per ton) and China ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
