In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in the Japanese lithium battery market, when its value decreased by -71.3% to $X. In general, consumption faced a abrupt contraction. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, lithium battery production stood at $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a pronounced contraction. After four years of decline, overseas shipments of lithium cells ans batteries increased by 18% to X tons in 2021. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 31%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, lithium battery exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The exports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

China (X tons), the United States (X tons) and Hong Kong SAR (X tons) were the main destinations of lithium battery exports from Japan, together comprising 60% of total exports. The Netherlands, Germany, Taiwan (Chinese), Mexico, South Korea, Singapore, the UK and Canada lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Taiwan (Chinese) (with a CAGR of +17.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X), the United States ($X) and Hong Kong SAR ($X) constituted the largest markets for lithium battery exported from Japan worldwide, together accounting for 60% of total exports. The average lithium battery export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 2.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 12%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In 2021, the highest price was recorded for prices to Canada ($X per ton) and the UK ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Singapore ($X per ton) and South Korea ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Canada (-2.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2021, overseas purchases of lithium cells ans batteries decreased by -17% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after four years of growth. Overall, total imports indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -18.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 28%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, lithium battery imports reduced to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 28%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, Indonesia (X tons) constituted the largest lithium battery supplier to Japan, with a 53% share of total imports. Moreover, lithium battery imports from Indonesia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (X tons), twofold. China (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Indonesia totaled +6.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (-2.1% per year) and China (+4.5% per year).

In value terms, Indonesia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of lithium cells ans batteries to Japan, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United States ($X), with a 23% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Indonesia amounted to +3.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (-5.2% per year) and China (+1.2% per year).
