In 2022, purchases abroad of mate decreased by -37.5% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, saw a significant increase. Moreover, mate imports from Argentina exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Brazil (X tons), threefold. Paraguay (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Argentina stood at +61.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Brazil (+6.6% per year) and Paraguay (+64.1% per year).

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Argentina stood at +49.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Brazil (+11.5% per year) and Paraguay (+54.5% per year).

The average mate import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 6% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
