The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 102%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, mate exports shrank to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 91% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then declined in the following year.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Germany (X tons) was the key exporter of mate, constituting 41% of total exports. The Netherlands (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 25% share, followed by France (20%). Portugal (X tons), Spain (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +142.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and France ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 80% share of total exports.
The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +113.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 5.3% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 24% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in the EU
Mate imports declined modestly to X tons in 2021, reducing by -3.7% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 50%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then contracted slightly in the following year.
In value terms, mate imports expanded to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Germany (X tons) and Spain (X tons) represented the key importers of mate in the European Union, together amounting to approx. 52% of total imports. France (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 13% share, followed by the Netherlands (12%) and Poland (8.8%). The Czech Republic (X tons) and Italy (X tons) held a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +82.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest mate importing markets in the European Union were Germany ($X), Spain ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), together accounting for 61% of total imports.
Among the main importing countries, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of +63.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 6.7% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 18% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in the Netherlands ($X per ton) and the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) and Poland ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
