Slaked Lime Market Size in CIS

The CIS slaked lime market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after three years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a pronounced contraction. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, slaked lime production rose slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a perceptible setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 28%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of slaked lime increased by 4.1% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 32%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, slaked lime exports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a mild reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 29% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Russia represented the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at 61% of total exports. Belarus (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 39% share of total exports.

Russia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the slaked lime exports, with a CAGR of +15.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+10.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Belarus (-10.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Russia and Uzbekistan increased by +40 and +14 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest slaked lime supplier in the CIS, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with a 19% share of total exports.

In Russia, slaked lime exports expanded at an average annual rate of +8.2% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belarus (-14.2% per year) and Uzbekistan (+16.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 9.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 32%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+5.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

After three years of growth, supplies from abroad of slaked lime decreased by -35.4% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a noticeable setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 36%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, slaked lime imports shrank dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 37% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Kazakhstan (X tons), distantly followed by Russia (X tons), Belarus (X tons) and Moldova (X tons) represented the key importers of slaked lime, together constituting 96% of total imports. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Belarus (with a CAGR of +22.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest slaked lime importing markets in the CIS were Kazakhstan ($X), Russia ($X) and Belarus ($X), with a combined 85% share of total imports.

Belarus, with a CAGR of +24.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -4.3% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 11%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020, and then fell slightly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+1.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
