Fertilizer Market Size in CIS

In 2021, the CIS fertilizer market decreased by -4.2% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Fertilizer Production in CIS

In value terms, fertilizer production rose markedly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production saw a mild downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in CIS

For the third year in a row, the CIS recorded growth in shipments abroad of fertilizers, which increased by 3.4% to X tons in 2021. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 20%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, fertilizer exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Russia represented the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which recorded 73% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons), achieving a 25% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to fertilizer exports from Russia stood at +2.9%. At the same time, Belarus (+6.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +6.4% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Belarus increased by +5.1 percentage points.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest fertilizer supplier in the CIS, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with a 21% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia totaled +1.2%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 54% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced shrinkage. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Belarus amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (-1.6%).

Fertilizer Imports

Imports in CIS

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of fertilizers, when their volume decreased by -5.3% to X tons. In general, imports, however, posted a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 64%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, fertilizer imports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +74.2% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 49%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the seven major importers of fertilizers, namely Kazakhstan, Belarus, Russia, Moldova, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan and Tajikistan, represented more than two-thirds of total import.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Tajikistan (with a CAGR of +20.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X), Russia ($X) and Belarus ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 59% share of total imports. Moldova, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 35%.

Tajikistan, with a CAGR of +19.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a noticeable decrease. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tajikistan (-0.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
