Fertilizer Market Size in the EU
In 2021, the EU fertilizer market increased by 8.4% to $X, rising for the fifth consecutive year after two years of decline. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Fertilizer Production in the EU
In value terms, fertilizer production expanded modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 4.7%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.
Fertilizer Exports
Exports in the EU
In 2021, the amount of fertilizers exported in the European Union expanded remarkably to X tons, increasing by 6.4% compared with the previous year. In general, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 10%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, fertilizer exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a slight downturn. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2021, the Netherlands (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Germany (X tons) represented the major exporter of fertilizers in the European Union, making up 52% of total export. Lithuania (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with an 8.5% share, followed by Poland (7.7%) and Spain (5.7%). Slovakia (X tons), France (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons), Italy (X tons), Finland (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Austria (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Belgium (with a CAGR of +6.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Belgium ($X) and Germany ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 49% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Lithuania, Poland, Spain, Slovakia, Italy, France, Bulgaria, Finland, the Czech Republic and Austria, which together accounted for a further 39%.
Among the main exporting countries, Slovakia, with a CAGR of +3.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 47% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight curtailment. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+1.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Fertilizer Imports
Imports in the EU
After two years of growth, purchases abroad of fertilizers decreased by -0.8% to X tons in 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 8.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, fertilizer imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the twelve major importers of fertilizers, namely France, Belgium, Germany, Poland, Spain, the Netherlands, Romania, Italy, Hungary, Ireland, Lithuania and Denmark, represented more than two-thirds of total import.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Romania (with a CAGR of +16.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, France ($X), Belgium ($X) and Spain ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 34% share of total imports. Poland, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Romania, Ireland, Hungary, Lithuania and Denmark lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 46%.
Romania, with a CAGR of +14.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, growing by 51% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a slight decline. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (-0.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
