The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 14%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, herring, salted or in brine imports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports faced a deep downturn. In 2022, Turkmenistan (X tons) represented the largest importer of herring, salted or in brine, committing 68% of total imports. Kazakhstan (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Tajikistan (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 27% share of total imports. Mongolia (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to herring, salted or in brine imports into Turkmenistan stood at -21.4%. At the same time, Mongolia (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mongolia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +4.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Tajikistan (-7.6%), Kazakhstan (-13.8%) and Uzbekistan (-20.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkmenistan ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and Tajikistan ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 93% share of total imports. Mongolia and Uzbekistan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 6.9%.

Mongolia, with a CAGR of +7.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 8.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the import price increased by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mongolia ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+7.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
