In value terms, herring, salted or in brine exports rose markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Denmark represented the main exporter of herring, salted or in brine in the European Union, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near 59% of total exports in 2022. The Netherlands (X tons) held a 22% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Germany (9.2%). Latvia (X tons), Lithuania (X tons) and Ireland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Denmark experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of herring, salted or in brine. At the same time, Latvia (+36.7%), Germany (+5.4%) and Lithuania (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Latvia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +36.7% from 2012-2022. Latvia, with a CAGR of +32.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -13.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the export price increased by 11%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Ireland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, herring, salted or in brine imports reached $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 18%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, Germany (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) represented the major importers of herring, salted or in brine in the European Union, together finishing at approx. 64% of total imports. There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
