Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Egypt represented the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached 59% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Swaziland (X tons), together generating a 38% share of total exports.

Exports from Egypt decreased at an average annual rate of -37.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Swaziland (+26.6%) and South Africa (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Swaziland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +26.6% from 2012-2021. Morocco experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. South Africa (+16 p.p.), Morocco (+15 p.p.) and Swaziland (+6.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Egypt saw its share reduced by -40.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest quilted textile products supplier in Africa, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with an 8.2% share of total exports. It was followed by Swaziland, with a 5.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Egypt stood at -34.1%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Morocco (-9.4% per year) and Swaziland (+22.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 32% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed modest growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 104%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+5.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, the amount of quilted textile products in the piece (excluding embroidery) imported in Africa reduced slightly to X tons, remaining constant against the previous year. In general, imports, however, showed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 118% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, quilted textile products imports rose remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 58%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Egypt was the key importer of quilted textile products in the piece (excluding embroidery) in Africa, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was near 65% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X tons), generating a 20% share of total imports. The following importers - Algeria (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) - together made up 7.5% of total imports.

Egypt was also the fastest-growing in terms of the quilted textile products in the piece (excluding embroidery) imports, with a CAGR of +26.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Algeria (+17.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Morocco experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tunisia (-1.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Egypt (+46 p.p.) and Algeria (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Tunisia and Morocco saw its share reduced by -5.1% and -25.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
