In general, exports saw a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, molluscs exports declined to $X in 2023. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2022, and then reduced in the following year.

Exports by Country

Mauritania (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) prevails in exports structure, together generating X% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Senegal (X tons), committing a X% share of total exports. The following exporters - South Africa (X tons), Tunisia (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) - each finished at a X% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for Namibia (with a CAGR of X%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, the largest molluscs supplying countries in Africa were Mauritania ($X), Morocco ($X) and Senegal ($X), with a combined X% share of total exports. South Africa, Tunisia and Namibia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X%.

In 2023, supplies from abroad of molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus) increased by X% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, imports increased by X% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by X%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2023 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Morocco was the key importer of molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus) in Africa, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was near X% of total imports in 2023. South Africa (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a X% share, followed by Egypt (X%) and Namibia (X%). The following importers - Mauritius (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) - together made up X% of total imports.

Imports into Morocco increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Nigeria (X%) and Senegal (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. South Africa and Mauritius experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Egypt (X%), Namibia (X%), Algeria (X%) and Tunisia (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Morocco (X p.p.) and Nigeria (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Mauritius, Algeria, Tunisia, Namibia, Egypt and South Africa saw its share reduced by X%, X%, X%, X%, X% and X% from 2012 to 2023, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Morocco ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus) in Africa, comprising X% of total imports.
