Among the main exporting countries, Mauritius, with a CAGR of +69.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 17% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Gym and fitness equipment imports soared to X tons in 2021, rising by 25% compared with 2020. Total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +75.0% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
In value terms, gym and fitness equipment imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +71.9% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 26%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
South Africa was the key importer of gym and fitness equipment in Africa, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 38% of total imports in 2021. Morocco (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 14% share, followed by Algeria (8.3%), Mauritius (6.7%) and Egypt (5.1%). Kenya (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Libya (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mauritius (+33.8%), Tanzania (+22.3%), Morocco (+16.8%), Kenya (+11.7%), Algeria (+9.0%), Ghana (+8.6%) and Tunisia (+7.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +33.8% from 2012-2021. Egypt experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Libya (-4.7%) and Nigeria (-7.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Morocco (+7.6 p.p.) and Mauritius (+5.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Egypt (-4.1 p.p.), Libya (-4.3 p.p.) and Nigeria (-6.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported gym and fitness equipment in Africa, comprising 28% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Morocco ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled +1.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (+12.8% per year) and Egypt (+1.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, leveling off at the previous year. In general, the import price showed a slight descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
