Whey Price in China (CIF) - 2023

The average whey import price stood at $1,015 per ton in September 2023, which is down by -20.9% against the previous month. Overall, the import price saw a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 an increase of 9.3% m-o-m. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $1,576 per ton. From December 2022 to September 2023, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was Ireland ($2,349 per ton), while the price for the United States ($590 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ireland (+1.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

Whey Price in China (FOB) - 2022

The average whey export price stood at $1,417 per ton in 2022, stabilizing at the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 56%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $2,710 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($6,130 per ton), while the average price for exports to Singapore ($414 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+25.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Whey Imports in China

After three years of growth, purchases abroad of whey decreased by -16% to 603K tons in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +10.2% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 38% against the previous year.

In value terms, whey imports fell to $938M in 2022. In general, total imports indicated strong growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +16.3% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +57.2% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 36%.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 101% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 318 tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, whey exports stood at $273K in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 50%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $545K. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
