China Picks Up Whey Imports from U.S., Belarus and Netherlands

China's whey imports continue to grow steadily. Over the past decade, imports rose twofold, from 263K tons in 2010 to 622K tons in 2020. Last year, China's whey imports soared by +38% y-o-y in physical terms. In value terms, the supplies to China grew from $598M in 2019 to $810M in 2020. Major whey suppliers, namely the U.S., Belarus and the Netherlands, expanded export volume to China by more than 50% over the past year. The average whey import price in China stood at $1,301 per ton in 2020.
China's Whey Imports by Country
From 2010 to 2020, China's imports grew from 263K tons to 622K tons. In value terms, imports rose from $338M to $810M over this period.
In 2020, the amount of whey imported into China increased by +38% compared with the previous year. In value terms, whey imports soared from $598M in 2019 to $810M (IndexBox estimates) in 2020.
In 2020, the U.S. (246K tons) constituted the largest supplier of whey to China, with a 40% share of total imports. Moreover, whey imports from the U.S. exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Belarus (59K tons), fourfold. The Netherlands (57K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 9.2% share.
In 2020, imports from the U.S. rose by +52.3% y-o-y. The supplies from Belarus and the Netherlands increased by +61.7% y-o-y and +67.9% y-o-y, respectively.
In value terms, the U.S. ($212M) constituted the largest supplier of whey to China, comprising 26% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by France ($101M), with a 12% share of total imports, and it was followed by the Netherlands, with a 9.8% share.
In 2020, the average whey import price amounted to $1,301 per ton, waning by -1.9% against the previous year. Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin; the country with the highest price was Germany ($2,236 per ton), while the price for Belarus ($857 per ton) was amongst the lowest. In 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the U.S., while the prices for the other significant suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
