Exports from China
In 2021, the amount of whey exported from China declined to X tonnes, waning by -X% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, exports saw a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tonnes in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, whey exports dropped modestly to $X in 2021. In general, exports faced a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
India (X tonnes) was the main destination for whey exports from China, accounting for a X% share of total exports. Moreover, whey exports to India exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Finland (X tonnes), threefold. Poland (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total exports with a X% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to India amounted to -X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Finland (+X% per year) and Poland (X% per year).
In value terms, Poland ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for whey exports from China, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Finland ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by India, with an X% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Poland was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Finland (-X% per year) and India (-X% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average whey export price stood at $X per tonne in 2021, rising by X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a pronounced decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per tonne. From 2019 to 2021, the the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to India ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+X%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Whey Imports
Imports into China
Whey imports into China fell to X tonnes in 2021, shrinking by -X% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +X% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of X% y-o-y. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tonnes, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, whey imports declined to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by X% year-to-year. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, the United States (X tonnes) constituted the largest supplier of whey to China, accounting for a X% share of total imports. Moreover, whey imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, France (X tonnes), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Belarus (X tonnes), with an X% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United States stood at +X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (-X% per year) and Belarus (+X% per year).
In value terms, the United States ($X) constituted the largest supplier of whey to China, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by France ($X), with a X% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a X% share.

Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average whey import price amounted to $X per tonne, stabilizing at the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a noticeable curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per tonne in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per tonne), while the price for Belarus ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
