View PricingTypes of Aggregates Used in Concrete
In the construction industry, aggregates are an essential component of concrete, as they make up about 60-80% of the volume of concrete. Aggregates are granular materials, such as sand, gravel, crushed stone, or recycled concrete, that form the structural filler in concrete. They provide bulk, strength, and durability to the finished concrete.
There are different types of aggregates used in concrete, each with its specific properties and characteristics. These aggregates can be categorized into two main types: fine aggregates and coarse aggregates.
Fine Aggregates:
Fine aggregates consist of natural or manufactured particles smaller than 5mm. They are commonly known as sand and are used in the production of concrete to fill the voids between the larger coarse aggregates. The properties of fine aggregates greatly influence the workability and strength of concrete.
Some common types of fine aggregates used in concrete include:
- Natural Sand: This is the most commonly used fine aggregate, obtained from riverbeds, beaches, or pits. Natural sand provides good workability.
- M-Sand: Manufactured sand is produced by crushing rocks, quarry stones, or larger aggregates. It has a more angular shape compared to natural sand, resulting in better bonding properties in concrete.
- Crushed Stone Dust: Crushed stone dust, also known as stone screenings, is a byproduct obtained from the crushing of stones. It is used as a fine aggregate in concrete production.
- Granular Soils: Certain types of granular soils, such as quarry dust, slag sand, and fly ash, can also be used as fine aggregates in concrete, depending on their properties.
Coarse Aggregates:
Coarse aggregates are particles greater than 5mm in size and typically consist of crushed stone, gravel, or recycled concrete. These aggregates provide strength to concrete and contribute to its overall dimensional stability.
Below are some commonly used types of coarse aggregates:
- Crushed Stone: Crushed stone is the most common type of coarse aggregate used in concrete. It is made by crushing quarried rock, boulders, or larger aggregate pieces into a specific size.
- Gravel: Gravel is another commonly used coarse aggregate. It is natural or artificially created by crushing rocks such as limestone, sandstone, or basalt.
- Recycled Concrete Aggregate (RCA): RCA is obtained from the demolition of existing concrete structures and is crushed and sorted for use as a coarse aggregate in new concrete.
- Slag Aggregates: Slag aggregates are a byproduct of iron and steel manufacturing processes. They are granular materials with glassy texture and are used as coarse aggregates in concrete.
Overall, the type of aggregates used in concrete depends on factors such as the desired strength, workability, and environmental considerations. The appropriate combination of fine and coarse aggregates enhances the performance and durability of concrete in various construction applications.
