Cement Market Size in China

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was decline in the Chinese cement market, when its value decreased by -4.2% to $X. Hong Kong SAR (X tons) was the main destination for cement exports from China, accounting for a 59% share of total exports. Moreover, cement exports to Hong Kong SAR exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Myanmar (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Guinea (X tons), with a 4.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Hong Kong SAR stood at +8.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Myanmar (+20.4% per year) and Guinea (-1.1% per year).

In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X) remains the key foreign market for cement exports from China, comprising 41% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Myanmar ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Guinea, with a 4.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Hong Kong SAR totaled +7.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Myanmar (+18.6% per year) and Guinea (+2.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average cement export price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 15% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average export price increased by 25% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Cameroon ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into China

In 2021, supplies from abroad of cement increased by 1.8% to X tons, rising for the fifth year in a row after four years of decline. Overall, imports posted a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 2,780%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, cement imports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 276% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In 2021, Vietnam (X tons) was the main supplier of cement to China, accounting for a 93% share of total imports. Moreover, cement imports from Vietnam exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Japan (X tons), more than tenfold.

The average cement import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average import price increased by 172% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while the price for Japan totaled $X per ton.
