In general, total exports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +61.3% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. The global exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Vietnam (X tons) represented the key exporter of cement clinker, creating 28% of total exports. Turkey (X tons) held a 10% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Egypt (7.7%), Indonesia (7.5%), Thailand (7%), the United Arab Emirates (6.8%) and Japan (5%). Iran (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons), Algeria (X tons), South Korea (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Pakistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Vietnam increased at an average annual rate of +8.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Egypt (+55.3%), Indonesia (+53.0%), Algeria (+52.8%), Pakistan (+38.9%), Morocco (+23.1%), Saudi Arabia (+13.0%), Turkey (+11.8%), Iran (+11.2%) and the United Arab Emirates (+10.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Egypt emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +55.3% from 2012-2022. Japan and Thailand experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, South Korea (-11.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Vietnam, Egypt, Indonesia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Algeria, Iran and Pakistan increased by +8.8, +7.6, +7.4, +5.1, +2.9, +2.1, +1.7 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the largest cement clinker supplier worldwide, comprising 23% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with a 10% share of global exports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Vietnam amounted to +5.0%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Turkey (+12.3% per year) and Egypt (+57.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average cement clinker export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 4.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average export price increased by 16%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per ton), while Japan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, after ten years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of cement clinker, when their volume decreased by -25.2% to X tons. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 21% against the previous year. Global imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined sharply in the following year.

In value terms, cement clinker imports dropped to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +55.1% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, global imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In 2022, Bangladesh (X tons), distantly followed by China (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Australia (X tons) represented the key importers of cement clinker, together constituting 43% of total imports. The following importers - the Philippines (X tons), Cameroon (X tons), France (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), Sri Lanka (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Chile (X tons) and Oman (X tons) - together made up 20% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +50.1%), while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest cement clinker importing markets worldwide were Bangladesh ($X), China ($X) and Australia ($X), with a combined 29% share of global imports.

Among the main importing countries, China, with a CAGR of +56.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average cement clinker import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 15% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per ton), while Cameroon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
