Tobacco Price in Turkey (FOB) - 2023

In July 2023, the average tobacco export price amounted to $7,210 per ton, which is down by -23% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in January 2023 when the average export price increased by 45% m-o-m. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $9,483 per ton. From February 2023 to July 2023, the the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Romania ($17,075 per ton), while the average price for exports to Jordan ($2,614 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Romania (+7.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Tobacco Price in Turkey (CIF) - 2023

The average tobacco import price stood at $7,410 per ton in July 2023, picking up by 11% against the previous month. Over the last twelve-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.2%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in January 2023 when the average import price increased by 15% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $7,963 per ton in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to July 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Germany ($9,150 per ton), while the price for Malaysia ($3,513 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+17.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Tobacco Exports in Turkey

In 2022, overseas shipments of tobacco (smoking tobacco, chewing tobacco, snuff) decreased by -5% to 24K tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, exports continue to indicate a noticeable slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 24%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 33K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, tobacco exports contracted to $165M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $211M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Tobacco Imports in Turkey

For the fourth consecutive year, Turkey recorded growth in supplies from abroad of tobacco (smoking tobacco, chewing tobacco, snuff), which increased by 29% to 34K tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +11.2% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, tobacco imports reached $170M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 17%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
