Which Country Exports the Most Tobacco in the World?

In 2016, the global exports of tobacco stood at 529K tonnes, falling by -5.7% against the previous year level. Overall, it indicated a strong expansion from 2007 to 2016: the total exports volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, tobacco exports decreased by -12.5% against its level of 2013. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2009, an increase of 20% y-o-y. Global tobacco export peaked of 604K tonnes in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

In value terms, tobacco exports amounted to $4.9B in 2016. Overall, tobacco exports continue to indicate a remarkable expansion. Over the period under review, global tobacco exports reached its maximum level of $5.5B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Tobacco Exports By Country

The countries with the highest levels of tobacco exports in 2016 were Germany (62K tonnes), France (54K tonnes), Belgium (36K tonnes), Russia (31K tonnes), India (30K tonnes), the Netherlands (29K tonnes), Poland (26K tonnes), United Arab Emirates (25K tonnes), the U.S. (23K tonnes), China (20K tonnes), Malaysia (20K tonnes), and Egypt (19K tonnes), together resulting at 71% of total export.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of tobacco exports, among the main exporting countries, was attained by Egypt (+63.2% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($772M), the Netherlands ($675M) and Belgium ($333M) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2016, with a combined 36% share of global exports.Poland, India, Russia, France, United Arab Emirates, China, the U.S., Egypt and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.

Egypt (+91.3% per year) recorded the highest growth rate of tobacco exports, in terms of the main exporting countries, over the last 9 years, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Tobacco Export Prices By Country

The average tobacco export price stood at $9,283 per tonne in 2016, ascending by 3% against the previous year. Over the period from 2007 to 2016 it increased at an average annual rate of +3.1%.The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2010, when export increased by 20% y-o-y. Global tobacco export peaked of $9,512 per tonne in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

There were significant differences in the average export prices amongst major exporting countries. In 2016, the country with the highest export prices was the Netherlands ($24 per kg), while Malaysia ($3,312 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of tobacco export prices was attained by Egypt (+17.2% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
