Taro (Cocoyam) Price in Australia (CIF) - 2023

The average taro (cocoyam) import price stood at $4,406 per ton in November 2023, which is down by -12.2% against the previous month. Over the period from December 2022 to November 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.9%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in September 2023 an increase of 32% month-to-month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $5,401 per ton. From October 2023 to November 2023, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($6,587 per ton), while the price for Tonga ($1,089 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From December 2022 to November 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Taiwan (Chinese) (+5.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

Taro (Cocoyam) Price in Australia (FOB) - 2022

The average taro (cocoyam) export price stood at $4,000 per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -16.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 99%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $9,400 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Nauru.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Fiji amounted to +30.4% per year.

Taro (Cocoyam) Imports in Australia

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was decline in supplies from abroad of taro, when their volume decreased by -3.3% to 2.8K tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 5.5% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 2.9K tons, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, taro (cocoyam) imports contracted to $9M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 8.4% against the previous year.
