For the fourth year in a row, the Australian cassava market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by X% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption, however, saw prominent growth. Cassava consumption peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2019, shipments abroad of cassava decreased by X% to X kg for the first time since 2014, thus ending a four-year declining trend. From 2014 to 2019, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to New Zealand amounted to X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Maldives (X% per year) and Papua New Guinea (X% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average cassava export price stood at $X per ton in 2019, surging by X% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a abrupt decline. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2019, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Maldives ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Papua New Guinea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2014 to 2019, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to New Zealand (X%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Cassava Imports

Imports into Australia

After three years of growth, overseas purchases of cassava decreased by X% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by X% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, cassava imports rose modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by X%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Tonga (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Fiji (X tons) were the main suppliers of cassava imports to Australia, with a combined X% share of total imports. India, Costa Rica, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X%.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by X%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
