Tallow Price in the United States (FOB) - 2023
In September 2023, the average tallow export price amounted to $1,626 per ton, rising by 5.7% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 an increase of 83% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum in September 2023.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Canada ($1,646 per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($1,035 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Canada (+3.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Tallow Price in the United States (CIF) - 2023
The average tallow import price stood at $1,385 per ton in September 2023, almost unchanged from the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 when the average import price increased by 13% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $1,802 per ton in October 2022; however, from November 2022 to September 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Canada ($1,789 per ton) and New Zealand ($1,445 per ton), while the price for Brazil ($1,211 per ton) and Argentina ($1,213 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Canada (-0.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
Tallow Exports in the United States
For the third consecutive year, the United States recorded decline in shipments abroad of tallow, which decreased by -5.1% to 286K tons in 2022. Overall, exports faced a deep reduction. The smallest decline of -4.7% was in 2020.
In value terms, tallow exports reduced to $379M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 20%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $383M, and then reduced slightly in the following year.

Tallow Imports in the United States
Tallow imports into the United States soared to 554K tons in 2022, growing by 66% against the previous year. Overall, imports recorded a significant increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, tallow imports soared to $945M in 2022. In general, imports showed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 130%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
