Sweet Potato Price in Uganda (FOB) - 2022
In 2022, the average sweet potato export price amounted to $1,934 per ton, which is down by -2.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, posted buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average export price increased by 76%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $1,981 per ton in 2021, and then declined modestly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($6,730 per ton), while the average price for exports to Rwanda ($193 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Switzerland (+25.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Sweet Potato Price in Uganda (CIF) - 2022
The average sweet potato import price stood at $431 per ton in 2022, increasing by 4.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the average import price increased by 43%. The import price peaked at $1,354 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($550 per ton), while the price for China ($343 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (+0.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
Sweet Potato Exports in Uganda
In 2022, sweet potato exports from Uganda dropped to 2.5K tons, declining by -6.5% compared with the year before. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 14% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 2.7K tons, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, sweet potato exports reduced to $4.8M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $5.3M, and then fell in the following year.

Sweet Potato Imports in Uganda
In 2022, overseas purchases of sweet potatoes were finally on the rise to reach 791 kg for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, faced a deep reduction.
In value terms, sweet potato imports surged to $341 in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant contraction.
