Sweet Potato Price in Hong Kong SAR (CIF) - 2023
The average sweet potato import price stood at $2,943 per ton in June 2023, leveling off at the previous month. Over the period under review, import price indicated strong growth from June 2022 to June 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +5.3% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on June 2023 figures, sweet potato import price decreased by -6.0% against April 2023 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in July 2022 an increase of 58% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $3,132 per ton in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to June 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was China ($6,514 per ton), while the price for Vietnam ($938 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+13.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Sweet Potato Price in Hong Kong SAR (FOB) - 2022
In 2022, the average sweet potato export price amounted to $3,405 per ton, increasing by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 48%. The export price peaked at $4,133 per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($3,964 per ton), while the average price for exports to Canada ($2,625 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+2.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Sweet Potato Imports in Hong Kong SAR
In 2022, overseas purchases of sweet potatoes decreased by -12.4% to 7.1K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +13.4% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 51%.
In value terms, sweet potato imports shrank to $16M in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +13.1% over the last three years.
