Steel Wire Price in the United States (CIF) - 2023
In August 2023, the average steel wire import price amounted to $1,598 per ton, leveling off at the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in January 2023 when the average import price increased by 5.3% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $2,053 per ton in September 2022; however, from October 2022 to August 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($2,294 per ton), while the price for China ($1,017 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (-0.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
Steel Wire Price in the United States (FOB) - 2023
In August 2023, the average steel wire export price amounted to $4,067 per ton, reducing by -3.3% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a slight decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2023 when the average export price increased by 22% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $4,777 per ton in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to August 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Mexico ($3,956 per ton), while the average price for exports to Aruba ($1,500 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+0.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Steel Wire Imports in the United States
For the fourth year in a row, the United States recorded growth in purchases abroad of steel wire, which increased by 0.4% to 1.7M tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.1% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
In value terms, steel wire imports skyrocketed to $3.2B in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +19.3% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +82.6% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
