Spice Price in Brazil (FOB) - 2022

In 2022, the average spice export price amounted to $2,915 per ton, rising by 6.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 32%. The export price peaked at $7,679 per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($3,798 per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($1,273 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (-2.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Spice Price in Brazil (CIF) - 2022

The average spice import price stood at $2,550 per ton in 2022, with an increase of 2.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 15% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($5,837 per ton), while the price for Argentina ($954 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+11.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

Spice Exports in Brazil

In 2022, overseas shipments of spices decreased by -10.9% to 124K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 14%.

In value terms, spice exports dropped slightly to $363M in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +16.2% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +56.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 42%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $381M, and then declined in the following year.

Spice Imports in Brazil

In 2022, imports of spices into Brazil expanded notably to 24K tons, increasing by 15% on 2021 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.8% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 26K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, spice imports surged to $61M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +11.7% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 28%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
