A soybean oil plant, also known as a soybean oil extraction plant or soybean crushing plant, is a facility that processes soybeans into oil. Soybeans are one of the most valuable crops due to their high protein and oil content. The oil extracted from soybeans is widely used in various food products, cooking oils, and industrial applications.
The process of extracting soybean oil involves several steps. Firstly, the soybeans are cleaned and prepared for processing. This includes removing any impurities, such as dirt, stones, and stems. Then, the soybeans are cracked and heated to break down the cell walls and enhance oil extraction efficiency.
After cracking, the soybeans are subjected to mechanical pressing or solvent extraction to extract the oil. Mechanical pressing involves the use of an oil press machine to crush the soybeans and separate the oil. This method is commonly used for small-scale operations. On the other hand, solvent extraction involves treating the cracked soybeans with a solvent, such as hexane, to dissolve the oil. This method is more efficient and widely used in large-scale soybean oil plants.
Once the oil is extracted, it undergoes a refining process to remove impurities, such as gums, free fatty acids, and pigments. The oil is typically degummed using water or phosphoric acid, followed by neutralization to remove free fatty acids. Afterward, the oil is bleached and deodorized to improve its color, odor, and taste.
The byproduct of soybean oil extraction, known as soybean meal, is also of great value. Soybean meal is a high-protein feed ingredient used in animal feed formulations. It is obtained by removing the oil from the soybeans and then grinding and sifting the remaining meal.
Soybean oil plants vary in size and capacity depending on the scale of production. Large-scale soybean oil plants can process thousands of tons of soybeans per day, while small-scale plants may process a few hundred tons. Additionally, some soybean oil plants are integrated with soybean processing facilities, where soybeans are also processed into other products such as soy protein isolates and soy flour.
In conclusion, a soybean oil plant is a facility that processes soybeans into oil. The oil extraction process involves cleaning, cracking, pressing or solvent extraction, and refining. The extracted oil is used for various purposes, while the byproduct, soybean meal, is used as animal feed. These plants can vary in size and capacity, and some are integrated with other soybean processing facilities.
