Sorghum Price in South Africa (FOB) - 2022

The average sorghum export price stood at $411 per ton in 2022, which is down by -40.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 47% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $688 per ton, and then fell notably in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($2,357 per ton), while the average price for exports to Swaziland ($283 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Zimbabwe (+17.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, the average sorghum import price amounted to $268 per ton, picking up by 12% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $1,248 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($3,012 per ton), while the price for Botswana ($144 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Australia (+8.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
