Which Country Imports the Most Sorghum in the World?

Global sorghum imports amounted to 12,910 thousand tonnes in 2015, growing by +66.6% against the previous year level. Overall, the global sorghum imports indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.6% over the last eight years.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015, when the output figure increased by +67% from the previous year level. In that year, the global sorghum imports reached its maximum volume, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, global sorghum imports amounted to $3,594 million in 2015. Overall, the value of global sorghum imports increased robustly from 2007 to 2015, expanding at an average annual rate of +10.6%. This trend pattern, however, fluctuated wildly throughout the analyzed period.

Sorghum Imports By Country

The country with the largest volume of the sorghum imports in absolute volumes was China (10,700 thousand tonnes), accounting for 83% of global imports. It was followed by Japan (833 thousand tonnes), with a share of 6% of global imports. Moreover, sorghum imports in China exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest importer, Japan (833 thousand tonnes), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Mexico with a share of 2%.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of sorghum imports in China stood at +172.6%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Japan (-4.8% per year) and Mexico (-22.8% per year).

In value terms, the country with the largest volume of imports of sorghum in absolute volumes was China (2,971 million USD), making up 83% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Japan (178 million USD), with a share of 5% of global imports. Moreover, sorghum imports in China exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest importer, Japan (178 million USD), more than tenfold. It was followed by Ethiopia with a share of 3%.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of sorghum imports in China was at +205.4%. The remaining importing countries experienced the following average annual growth rates: Japan (-5.7% per year) and Ethiopia (+5.6% per year).
