In June 2023, the average smoked salmon import price amounted to $24,180 per ton, rising by 2.2% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2023 an increase of 11% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $24,967 per ton in March 2023; however, from April 2023 to June 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In June 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Germany ($28,577 per ton) and Denmark ($27,463 per ton), while the price for the UK ($19,165 per ton) and Norway ($20,626 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+1.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Smoked Salmon Price in the United States (FOB) - 2023
The average smoked salmon export price stood at $15,327 per ton in June 2023, reducing by -33.7% against the previous month. Overall, the export price saw a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in August 2022 an increase of 30% m-o-m. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $31,066 per ton. From September 2022 to June 2023, the the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In June 2023, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($33,752 per ton), while the average price for exports to Colombia ($8,818 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Guatemala (+3.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Smoked Salmon Imports in the United States
In 2022, the amount of smoked pacific, atlantic and danube salmon imported into the United States rose significantly to 10K tons, picking up by 11% on 2021. In general, total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +17.3% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +61.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
In value terms, smoked salmon imports surged to $223M in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +19.1% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +68.8% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
